Problem
Personalized algorithms have exacerbated the polarization of opinion.

The conflict does not subside as society evolves, so it continues to exist among the younger generation. Because they are young, they are more susceptible to the influence of louder voices.

This sparked the question of whether there is a way for two people with opposing views to have a rational conversation.

Research
The use of different social media sites as sources of information has created information gaps.
Because the information they have received is different, they cannot engage in the conversation. This has led to campus clashes between Chinese and Hong Kong students at Australian universities.
To burst the "filter bubble", some people intentionally follow people disagree with on Twitter to avoid the filter bubble.
Competitive Analysis
The gap between opinion sharing and news platform

Discussions are an important activity after reading the news. However, discussing and reading on different platforms leads users to limit the extension of their thinking and learning about the event. This then become my opportunity to create a platform that allows users to share their opinions and read news in one place.

HMW: keep students interested in journalism?
Real-time discussions are more likely to engage the audience.
Listen first, to understand the controversial news, and then read the article in detail. To attract the user's attention to in news events, a real-time dialogue is used to interact with the viewer.
HMW:lead user to think about news?
Encourage user to ask questions.
Reading an article with a question in mind can better stimulate the reader's ability to think. It is better to give the questions asked by other users directly before reading to get them to think about the news event than to have users who have little interest in asking questions spontaneously.
HMW: become a participant?
A multifaceted presentation to community dynamics.
Reading can also feel immersive when showing a community opinion sharing and all the interactions within it. Sharing is more than just expressing an opinion, it becomes a bridge to give others a link to read the reference article.

Personalised algorithm makes student not familiar with diversed views. The online censorship and the phenomenon of filter bubbles in news consumption has been defined as a problem that worsens online segregation. To burst the "filter bubble", some people intentionally follow people disagree with on Twitter to avoid the filter bubble.

Reading news but stops at thinking

Alan tried to get more information about the news event.

Opportunity

  1. After understanding one, there will be another question. But the limited space for communication interrupts the continuity of curiosity.
  2. Users generally only see articles from one point of view, so it would be interesting to see articles with different opinions brought together.
  3. Lack of information is insufficient to make an independent judgement.
  4. There is no active discussion, students quickly lose interest in the news.

Design Goal
• Engage students with effective news reading
• Increase user engagement and participation

The pain point is that students have little knowledge and are easily influenced. One way to gain knowledge is through communication. Therefore the design goal is to use news events as a bridge to dialogue.

Pain Point

  • Information and viewpoints are decentralized
  • When reading the news, users are more interested in what other people think than in the events themselves.
  • To form a rational opinion, one needs to be in an inclusive environment.

Design Strategy

  • Find news from multi-channel Engage users with the news from other angles such as comments and questions.
  • Hear more about how others see it. Connect with people and become an active thinker
  • Exchange of views
Thinking outside the box and expanding the boundaries of thinking
